Touring Manila

We spent the day sightseeing. The Philippines is predominately Catholic. Our first stop was Quiapo church.

It is especially crowded on Friday's when devotees come to light a candle in supplication to the Black Nazarene, believed to be miraculous.

The inside of Quiapo Church. It is busy with people just stopping in to say a quick prayer. I think it is busier than our Church in Lincoln on a Sunday morning.

Just outside the Church is a street market with vendors selling everything from religious items to food and clothing.

DVD's - any movie or TV show you can think of they have it...and only a buck.

Mom and dad, the electrical wiring was like we saw in Vietnam.

This is one of the bike shops Joel went to with John the day before. It is across the street from Quiapo Church.

Joel bought a bottle of Coke and the lady opened it for him and poured it into the plastic bag you see in his hand. She wanted to keep the bottle to recycle which is okay but it wasn't very convenient to drink...

The watermelon is fantastic here. It also happens to be Joel's favorite fruit so we have been indulging frequently
It's always fun to see priest and nuns out and about

A little grocery store at the street market

Anyone for coconut juice
All aboard...We're off to China Town for lunch

Our motorcycle driver dropped us off in front of a place called Red Dragon and said it was good. Unfortunately the food was some of the worst we have had and the longest wait for an empty restaurant we have had since we can remember but we passed time with our fruit drinks and listening to Ethan try to pronounce words we ask him to say. He does pretty well with most but he makes us laugh at the ones he's not even close with. Evie loves asking him to say "Penelope".

Prior to the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors to the Philippine Islands, the district of Santa Cruz was partly a marshland, patches of greeneries, orchards and partly rice fields. A Spanish expedition in 1581 claimed the territory and awarded it to the Jesuits. The Jesuits built the first Roman Catholic Church in the area where the present Santa Cruz Parish stands on June 20, 1619.
Evie looking at some birds for sale at the market

Evie found a Mr. Doughnut kiosk in the middle of the street market - happy girl.

The "Jeepny's" (private taxi's) were really cool. Each one was different and some of them were really elaborate.

People were so friendly and helpful. We asked a motorcycle taxi for directions and two different people walking by stopped to help him look at our map.

Our driver is starting his string-pulled motor.

Joel riding on the outside of the taxi. He said it was sketchy and kept trying to keep his knees pulled in

Manila Cathedral was completed in 1951. The main Cathedral sits over five predecessors, the first of which was erected in 1581. Four of the previous constructions were destroyed by earthquakes and fires. The fifth was reduced to a bombed-out shell during the Liberation of Manila in 1945.

Our last stop before returning to the hotel for some rest was Fort Santiago. The fort was built during the Spanish colonial occupation, which lasted three centuries; Occupied by the British forces for two years in the 18th century and Occupied by American forces in 1898, when Spain surrendered the Philippines. It was destroyed in World War II and resurrected in 1950.

We enjoyed a chill evening after a long day. We saw the movie The Princess and the Frog. The movie for our whole family was only $10 and the movie theater was just off a mall food court and you could bring any food you wanted into the theater.

Can you believe it, a Dairy Queen! I got a blizzard and of course it was fantastic.

1st day in Manila

Joel had a full day with a distributor who flew in from Cebu. They visited a few local bike shops that Carry Tomac bikes. The kids and I had a fun day relaxing by the pool and checking out the local mall.

GQ here I come
Whee. We went to the mall for lunch and play time.
Evie and her little friend are busy taking orders at their coffee shop.

Ethan's on the look out...

We had Burger King for lunch. The menu was a bit different from the US. Evie had fried chicken with a side of rice that came with a container of gravy. Ethan and I shared a hamburger. I'm not sure why but restaurants don't offer milk like they do in the US. All McDonald's or BK type restaurants only have soda, hot chocolate or juice here.

Ethan is being a goof, eating a french fry.

After naps and relaxing at the hotel we took a walk and grabbed dinner with Joel before he went to a second dinner with John and some employees from John's bike shop. We haven't had Mexican food since Baja Fresh in California. Dinner wasn't bad. It did satisfy our Mexican food craving but it was no Baja Fresh!

Evie is tuckered. It's always interesting to see what the kids want to bring along when we leave the house or hotel room. Tonight Evie brought her Jasmine Polly Pocket who is riding a horse from Grandma Potter.

Manila, Philippines

We made it to the Manila, Philippines. It is a short flight from Taipei...and inexpensive too. Only $600 for our whole family, thanks to Dylan. He was able to book our flight so it was cheaper.

Ethan is playing peek-a-boo with his headphones. Yes, you're seeing it, a whitie sitting across the aisle from Joel also.
We did buy a seat for Ethan but the kids share one when it's movie time. I think it's cute they can both fit in one seat, but not for much longer. They are already starting to elbow each other...
I wasn't sure what to expect the Philippines to be like but I was really surprised as we started our decent to Manila. The opposite side of the plane from our seats were lots of tall buildings and a huge city. Our side of the plane was the ocean, over populated areas and flat with mountains in the distance.

Really, looking down would you ever guess this is the Philippines?

I am still surprised we are flying over the Philippines right now. This could be somewhere in the midwest for all I know. It was green, flat and sectioned like farming land. The pictures don't show how green it is but it was surprisingly green especially for how hot it was. The Philippines is in their winter season and the temperature is like the summer in Lincoln...on a hot, hot day.

Taxiing to the airport after our landing

Waiting for our baggage. Ethan saw Joel with his foot propped and it was hilarious watching him try to get his foot up like his daddy's.

The kids enjoyed a ride on the baggage cart to our hotel room.

A view from our room on the 5th floor. Across the street is a huge shopping mall with every kind of western restaurant you can think of. I think the food was our biggest surprise. We weren't sure what to expect but we certainly weren't expecting western food. They had all the usual chain's you can think of from McDonald's, BK, Starbucks, T.G.I.F, Outback Steakhouse, Chili's to totally unexpected ones like Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Dairy Queen, Hot Dog on a Stick, Sbarro's pizza, etc.

The kids always have fun breaking in our room as we unpack.

Evie is pretending to be Rapunzel with her long hair. Ethan of course is chasing her around the room trying to rip off her hair...

Gao Mei Beach

We went to Gao Mei Beach with Clarke, Dylan and his fiance Kate. It's not what you might think when I say 'beach'. The ocean is at least a mile out from the beach and the beach is more like marshy grass lands. It's perfect for the kids and quite beautiful

The water level is about an inch, just perfect for the kids to be able to run and splash and the ocean is far enough away the kids can run until they get tired and we don't have to worry about them drowning or getting lost...

Clarke, soaking it all in

Evie's not afraid to get dirty. Only a few seconds after her little feet touched the water she was busy digging and covering herself with mud.

Ethan took a more timid approach, testing the water and digging his little toes in the mud before really going for it...
He got brave enough to splash but didn't like the water and mud hitting his face...at first. He quickly got over it and just had fun splashing and getting wet

Ethan is watching and learning from his big sister.

There were lots of cool little crabs and boy they were fast

Dylan and Kate

Ethan stopped playing to watch the motorcycle drive by...yes, a motorcycle

And there he goes...

Clarke and Dylan

Ethan had fun getting his hands buried by Dylan

One last look at the sunset

All cleaned up and tuckered. I was surprised they didn't fall asleep on our drive home.

A look back at the sunset as we all piled into the Matiz
